What is UIDAI?
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was created by the Indian Government under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It works as per the Aadhaar Act 2016, officially called the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. This law provides the base for all UIDAI activities like Aadhaar Card Update, Aadhaar Enrollment, and Aadhaar Services Online on the UIDAI Portal.
What is Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit number that UIDAI randomly assigns to each individual. It serves two key functions for residents of India: it verifies their identity (Proof of Identity) and confirms their address (Proof of Address).
UIDAI: Mission & Objective
The goal of the Aadhaar Card issued by UIDAI is to empower Indian citizens with a unique digital identity, ensuring that services and benefits are delivered efficiently, transparently, and in a targeted manner.
What are the Objectives of UIDAI Aadhaar?
The Aadhaar Card, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), was started to provide every resident of India with a single digital identity. The main purpose is to make government schemes, online verification, and public services more accessible, transparent, and efficient so that benefits reach the right people. Let’s understand the key objectives of UIDAI’s Aadhaar Card in detail:
- Strong Aadhaar System – Create and manage a secure and reliable Aadhaar platform to issue Aadhaar numbers for all eligible residents of India under the Digital India Mission.
- Update & Verification Facility – Provide simple online and offline ways for people to update Aadhaar details and use Aadhaar verification for identity proof in banking, SIM card, PAN, and other services.
- Data Safety & Privacy – Protect all personal information, authentication records, and Aadhaar-linked data with strong data privacy measures, ensuring safety from misuse and cyber threats.
- Technology Support – Maintain a robust, scalable, and future-ready tech infrastructure that can support Aadhaar services for millions of users across India.
- Long-Term Growth – Establish UIDAI as a trusted and sustainable organization that continues to grow as per its mission, vision, and Digital Governance values.
- Legal Compliance – Ensure Aadhaar services follow the Aadhaar Act and that all citizens, businesses, and government bodies use Aadhaar under proper legal guidelines.
- Rules & Regulations – Frame clear policies and rules for smooth functioning, easy access, and effective use of Aadhaar services for both online and offline needs.
- Reliable Identity Proof – Offer a strong and universal identity verification system that solves the problems of old ID proofs like ration card, voter ID, or driving licence, and supports online KYC.

An Aadhaar Enrollment Number, also known as EID number, is a unique 14-digit code printed on the Aadhaar acknowledgement slip given at the time of Aadhaar card registration. The EID format is always fixed, for example: 1234/12345/12345.
The acknowledgement slip of Aadhaar is a white paper receipt that shows this enrollment number along with details like applicant’s name, photo, demographic info, and a scannable Aadhaar QR code. This slip works as proof of Aadhaar card enrollment until the original Aadhaar card download or generation is complete.

- Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar registered mobile number in the designated area and click on Download Aadhaar button to download the Aadhaar PDF on your device.

What is Virtual ID (VID) and How to Generate It?
A Virtual ID (VID) is a 16-digit temporary, revocable number that Aadhaar holders can generate as an alternative to sharing their actual Aadhaar number. The VID serves as a proxy for Aadhaar authentication and follows a specific format that includes a checksum digit. Users can generate multiple VIDs, but only the latest one remains active, automatically deactivating previous ones.
The VID can be generated online through UIDAI official website myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in or through SMS as well.

How to Update Aadhaar Card ?
UIDAI provides the UIDAI Aadhaar update services. It can be download via:
- Online Method (Only POI, and POA)
- Offline Method (Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile Number, Email, Address, or Biometric)
To modify or update your Aadhaar details offline, including your name, birth date, gender, mobile number, email address, residential address, or biometric data (photo/iris/fingerprint), you’ll need to schedule an appointment online and then visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person. Further details along with necessary document requirements are provided below.
- Date of Birth (DOB) – Can Be Updated Only Once
You are allowed to correct your date of birth on your Aadhaar card only once in your lifetime. This rule ensures that key identity information stays consistent and secure.
- When can you update?
If your Aadhaar card shows the wrong date of birth, you can request a correction by submitting valid proof. - What documents are accepted?
Documents such as a birth certificate, passport, PAN card, or any other government-issued ID that mentions your correct DOB. - Minor corrections count too:
Even small adjustments—like changing just a day or correcting a single digit in the year—will be treated as your one permitted update. So, make sure all the information is accurate before requesting a change. - Important Note:
After one successful update, any further request to change your date of birth is allowed only under exceptional cases and requires special approval from UIDAI through a formal process.
- Gender – Can Be Updated Only Once
You can update the gender field on Aadhaar only one time in your lifetime. This restriction is meant to protect the integrity of demographic data used in identity verification.
- What’s needed for update?
A valid supporting document—such as a government-issued ID or medical certificate—must be provided. - Small changes count too:
Just like with DOB, even a single gender update—whether it’s male to female, female to male, or to third gender—is treated as your only allowed update. Make sure to submit accurate information the first time.
- Name – Can Be Updated Twice in a Lifetime
Your name on the Aadhaar card can be changed up to two times during your lifetime. This limit applies whether the changes are major or minor.
- What kind of name changes are allowed?
- Correcting spelling mistakes
- Changing your name after marriage
- Adding or removing initials or middle names
- Important clarification:
Even minor edits—such as fixing a spelling error (“Sharmaa” to “Sharma”) or changing “Raj Kumar” to “R. Kumar”—will count as one full name update. So, both major and small edits are considered official changes and are included in the two-time limit. - Documents required:
A gazette notification (for official name changes), marriage certificate, or other valid ID proof that reflects the updated name. - How to update your name?
- Online: Through the UIDAI website or mAadhaar app
- Offline: Visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Aadhaar center)
- Fee: ₹50 per update. You can also update two details (e.g., name and address) in a single request.
- Address – No Limit on Updates
Unlike other personal details, your address can be updated as many times as needed. This is especially useful for individuals who move frequently due to job transfers, rentals, or relocation.
- Fee: ₹50 for each update
